A nonprofit political advocacy group which emanated from President Obama's re-election campaign says hackers altered the links contained in tweets sent under his name on Monday.

An official with Organizing for Action said that someone hacked the link shortener used by the account.

The pro-Assad 'hacktivist' group the Syrian Electronic Army quickly claimed responsibility for the action.

Barack Obama speaks during an installation ceremony of new FBI director James Comey in DC on Monday. The President's official Twitter account was hacked today and the Syrian Electronic Army claimed responsibility

The official from the nonprofit said the Twitter account itself had not been compromised. Though the account is listed under Obama's name, the president himself rarely sends messages.

A group called the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) claimed responsibility for the action. The group aligns itself with Syrian President Bashar Assad and has taken credit for hacking into social media sites in the past.

The President's Twitter account appears to have been compromised on Monday with the Syrian Electronic Army claiming responsibility

The Syrian Electronic Army have been prolific in 'hacktivist' attacks over the past few months targeting the New York Times, Twitter and CNN

The SEA posted on their Twitter account on Monday to claim responsibility: '@BarackObama's Twitter and Facebook accounts have been hacked by Syrian Electronic Army.'

The hackers also claimed to have gained access to Obama's campaign email accounts, posting on their Twitter account: 'We accessed many Obama campaign emails accounts to assess his terrorism capabilities. They are quite high.'

The Twitter account now appears to be working as normal.

Obama's official Twitter account, which is followed by around 39 million people, was not hacked.

In August, the SEA was able to disrupt the New York Times web page multiple times. Twitter, CNN, the Huffington Post and Global Post also have been targeted.

The Times has been targeted several times, but perhaps the most high profile assault came when the group was able to take nytimes.com offline for two hours.
