Dua Lipa has discussed gender inequality in the music industry in a candid new interview. 

The pop princess, 24, shared her take on the different pressures placed on male and female artists as she stars on one of five special covers for the June issue of GQ - dedicated to the NHS and all other key workers.

Posing up a storm for the publication's accompanying photoshoot, the musician also touched on being 'proud' of her second studio album, championing her 'girl gang' and her 'unsung hero', Syrian filmmaker-turned-hospital cleaner Hassan Akkad.

Despite being one of the UK's highest-earning performers, the New Rules hitmaker believes there's still an imbalance between the treatment of male and female singers. 

'I remember going to a show by … a male artist that actually doesn't do anything on stage. And they got this stellar five star review', she recalled.

The award-winning belter - who made YouTube history as the youngest female singer to hit one billion views on a music video back in 2018 - insisted she's committed to encouraging other women to take on unconventional roles in music, particularly behind-the-scenes.

Wow! Check out Dua Lipa in this cover shoot for British GQ.

The singer puts on a colourful display in a Valentino bright pink maxi dress, which has us dreaming of sunsets on sandy beaches with cocktails in hand.

This particular dress by Valentino stood out for all the right reasons. Firstly, Dua has swapped her usually skimpy outfits for a billowing floaty maxi dress. With a square neckline and tiers of chiffon fabric, the dress basically makes up 80% of the image.

Styled by super stylist Lorenzo Posocco, tger singer sported her signature blonde streaks in a cute up-do.

'We're practically doing cartwheels, costume changes - it's a spectacle': The artist (pictured in November) believes there's an imbalance between the treatment of male and female singers


Dua said: 'There is a massive problem - that maybe starts in schools - in which girls aren't necessarily encouraged to play more masculine instruments, aren't really encouraged to go into production, whereas men naturally fall into that path. 

'My very, very closest friends are all girls. I always feel it's easier to talk to girls and I'm more open around female energy. Maybe if women in general had a little bit more of that in studios it wouldn't feel so intimidating to begin with.'

Back in March, the One Kiss singer dropped Future Nostalgia after leaking two weeks before its original release date in April.













The brunette scored her first UK number-one album, with its lead single Don't Start Now reaching the top spot in countries such as Ireland, Croatia, and the US. 

On heavily influencing the project's creative direction, Dua declared: 'I needed to create an album that I was really proud of, without the opinion of other people.

'If I stayed online and tried to follow the guidelines of stan culture, I'd probably be trying to remake 'New Rules' over and over again.'

The confident music icon also expressed her gratitude towards healthcare professionals steering the fight against coronavirus for GQ's second annual Heroes issue.

She took the opportunity to share the story of refugee Hassan, who signed up to the NHS volunteering scheme to help disinfect COVID-19 wards at his local hospital in East London. 

Dua shared: 'If I had to pick just one hero my hero would be Hassan Akkad who cleans the Covid-19 wards of Whipps Cross Hospital in London.

'He was originally a teacher in Damascus. Hassan was forced to flee Syria after he was jailed and tortured for taking part in peaceful protests. 

'When he embarked on a treacherous journey from Turkey to the UK he put himself in even greater danger by recording the whole thing on a secret camera phone. He did it to such effect that the documentary 'Exodus' won a BAFTA in 2016. 

'Now he's once again putting himself on the front line to help patients and NHS staff in the fight against Covid-19. He describes his cleaning job as the most important job he's ever done and wears his NHS badge as a badge of honour. 

'He's my hero because his generosity teaches us so much empathy and about looking out for each other, wherever you come from and whoever you are.'
