Most damage to a Sonus Complete Review person's hearing will occur in the cochlea, when too much noise will overload the tiny hair cells. This excess noise may change the cochlear mechanism's structure by reducing enzymes and other energy sources in the cochlear fluids. These fluids are important because they provide most of the hair cells' nourishment. Continued exposure to noise will increase stress to the hair cells, causing the hairs to fuse together. The hair cells eventually disintegrate and the nerve fibers to the cells disappear. This causes permanent damage because hair cells do not regenerate. A sudden, sharp, and very loud noise, known as "acoustic trauma," can vibrate the inner ear's mechanical system so violently that membranes in the cochlea can rupture, hair cells can be torn from the basilar membrane, and the inner workings of the ear can be disrupted. If the cochlea membranes rupture, ear fluids can mix and cause poisons that will damage hair cells that were not destroyed by the initial loud noise. High-intensity noises that occur over long periods of time can cause lasting damage to the ears; for example, working in a loud environment for 8 hours a day for 10 years or more. This hearing loss from noise is quite common among people who work with machines or musicians who play loud music. Work-Related Hearing Loss Hearing loss can occur in a number of industrial environments. Even though noise above 90 dB can injure your hearing, some people can work in noise up to 120 dB before it begins to hurt their ears. Working at a job where noise of 90 dB or more is normal may cause some slight ringing or muffling of noises. These symptoms more than likely will fade after an evening or weekend away from the noise. Several months of this exposure could cause permanent hearing loss. Work-induced hearing loss would probably not be noticed at first because the high frequencies which are affected first do not interfere with the understanding of speech. Once the middle frequencies are affected, the hearing loss would be noticed. By this time, the hearing loss could be permanent.
